Informal Workshops

VAQG “Informals” / Boutique News and Upcoming Events
Hello everyone!
I am Cheryl Czerwinski, your First Vice President and in charge of all things for the monthly Informal Sewing held at Jacaranda Trace. This includes providing ‘special projects’ toward a common goal of creating items for the 2020 Quilt Show Boutique or quilts for community service.
We are always looking for quick, easy, and inexpensive ideas for items to make for the 2020 Quilt Show Boutique. If any of you have ideas for items that could become ‘Boutique best sellers’ please let me know. Informal workshops provide an excellent opportunity for quilters to meet together to learn from each other; to share ideas; to become acquainted with a group of friendly, helpful folks; to work on special guild projects; and even to share lunch!

In addition, we will be making “Fidget Quilts” or “Alzheimer’s Blankets” that are used by persons with sensory or memory issues. While I don’t have a pattern, there are a number of ways to make them ~BUT~ they should be of a smaller size (placemat size to “lap size”). Rob Appel has a nice YouTube video (‘Make a Fidget Quilt with Rob’) with some great ideas for making one. This could include a zipper; pocket; buttons; flowers; textured items such as burlap, satin, or corduroy – you get the idea. In addition they should not have anything that could be easily removed and become a choking hazard (firmly attach buttons and such - no glue-on items).

At our January 9, 2020 Informal at Jacaranda Trace, member Sharon Bottini will demo how to make rope baskets. She suggests those interested bring a package of clothesline (cost is about $2 from Walmart – found next to the ironing boards), coordinating or scrappy 1” strips of fabric, and a purple glue stick. Sharon will show you how to start the base, bring up the sides, and end the basket. We think these will also make some nice items for the 2020 Quilt Show Boutique.
After taking a look at the items already donated for the Boutique, it was suggested that baby items could be used such as bibs or quilts. No specific patterns are needed.
If you have made items to donate to the Boutique we are happy to receive them. If you are thinking about making anything be aware that there is an abundance of wine bags, zipper bags, and tote bags.
Keep in mind that these items are only suggestions and not the only items that will be at the boutique. We are counting on the talents of you, our members, to bring your creativity on board so that we have a variety of wonderful things to sell to those who visit our show.
All of your efforts toward the success of the 2020 Quilt Show are so very greatly appreciated. Together we will produce an event that we can be proud of!

While you can bring your own lunch, you can also purchase a lovely lunch in the dining room for a very reasonable price. If you will be staying for lunch, please make your reservation with Cheryl Czerwinski by noon on the Monday prior to the Thursday Informal (the café needs advance notice to ensure adequate food and staff). Cheryl can be reached at 248-505-4164 or Cash only – no credit cards, and exact change is needed. Lunches run from $6.75 to $8 and include your entrée, beverage, and dessert. No tipping allowed!! To ensure you have correct change, please bring one 5, three 1s, and four quarters.

Jacaranda Trace is located at the NE corner of US 41 and Jacaranda Blvd., 3600 William Penn Way, Venice, FL 34293. On Thursdays you may find parking under the Cadbury Commons building (follow the ‘Event Parking’ signs); if not, park in the shell lot behind the Cadbury Commons Building. Follow the concrete path to the back entrance door. Once inside, step onto the elevator to the 2nd floor, turn right and go to the end of the hall. You will hear us laughing - follow the sound.

Hope to see many of you there.
